women on the same level as men in news channels??

News channels a decade ago were limited to a number of 3 or 4.Nowadays we have approximately 30 to 40 newschannels.Freedom to media especially news channels was levied in musharafs era. For my report I chose to analyze news channels and evaluate whether the freedom of speech in media has helped women to an extent or not. My basic focus was mainly on geo, dunya, express news, samaa and Ajj TV.

I looked at the news bulletin at 8 as well as 9 on these particular channels and it could be seen that almost on every channel one of the news caster is a women. Some news channels even have both the news casters as women. This shows that women now in this era are treated with respect and are placed on the same level as men.

However all the news reports regarding women are always either degrading or disturbing. On every news channel we either hear about rape stories, or domestic violence stories. Words such as “mazloom” “bechari” etc are used for women on regular basis. One out of 10 days we hear about women who actually have achieved something in life and are working for any cause.

If we look at talk shows hosted by men and women on news channels, it would not be wrong to say that women are as focused and well educated about all the issues as men. I am not denying the fact that men are still in a majority but women are no longer the minority. If we start naming talk shows we can state many such as “News beat on SAMMA” by Meher bokhari, talkshow by “Nasim zehra”,” Katrina on express news” and “Asma on dunya”.time slots given to these women anchors are he same as men. They are not treated or portrayed as beauty objects on television rather they talk about facts and figures as confidently as men.

Whereas if we look at other talk shows hosted by women in the morning such as good morning Pakistan, Nadia khan show, morning with hum etc all of these shows have no subject and no aim in it. the talk shows are basically more focused on the clothes the anchors are wearing the shoes they wear etc. These shows present women as weak and meager who can only talk about clothes and shopping.

Women like nasim zehra and meher bokhari are showing a totally different picture to the world.nasim is an aged woman whereas meher is a young woman but we cannot compare their strong points. Both of them are fully capable and deserving on their posts.meher bokhari has broken or at least tried to break the stereotype on young women. she has shown our society that not only can women look beautiful but what they talk about also has substance” Every woman is a dumb blonde.” this notion has totally been broken and been proven right by all the anchors on every newschannel.according to me they show a new light and spark for every women. Women nowadays cannot be set back by men but they now walk with men in every walk of life, especially women on news channels have proved themselves right quite confidently and have been able to set the bar quite high for not only women but men in their fields as well.
