Majestic Cover Drives!

Let's face it! You're just not good enough for it. You were born to help the society grow but hey, it actually was a good cover drive! But come to think of it, you can not even play for 30 days a month. 20 player squads have to be taken on every tour where 15 men used to suffice. You look funny while running up to deliver the ball. If I were you, I would rather stay back and deliver babies i.e help the society move forward. Why do you find it so difficult to admit that you were not born to play cricket. What can however, be done without hampering you cricketing career is that you matches can be kept discreet rather than airing them live on television. People watch cricket matches to enjoy the sport and no one is looking to get entertained by means other than the sport. What is even more questionable is that who are the dummasses who advertise during your matches? Anyways, what I would suggest here to sportswomen is that they better sit back home and do what they were born to do. I would suggest the media to stop encouraging such pseudo-sports by airing them on television and I would suggest brand managers to please stop advertising during these non-lucrative hours. There are better ways to throw money away!

Listening your heart out!

Blink twice if you find a news caster hot!
It is beyond my understanding why a female news caster has to look eye-catching while reporting even the gloomiest of situations. It should be the vocal effectiveness which should be kept into consideration while hiring a news caster in the first place, however, even if it is not, someone must go and tell these ladies that you need to look good while reporting - not hot.
Or let's keep the news bulletin aside for a moment, why do those ladies in cooking shows 'try' to look oh-so-beautiful? To be honest, if I personally look back at my life, the tastiest of foods that I've had in my life had either been cooked by some not-worth-looking-at lady or some man.
Come on! Grow out of these complexes and give your undiluted attention to your work rather than your killer look so that people can get information out of your bulletins rather than getting sighs.

Media and Domestic Violence

By: Shehryar

So often does the media highlight domestic violence cases that the matter is losing its importance over time and the masses have subconsciously accepted the phenomena that women actually deserve to be abused. Deserve might sound to be a very strong word for the cause but let's look into it before jumping to any conclusions.
Would you take any of such occurrences as seriously as you could have taken in case you did not know how frequent they were? The fact of the matter is that you neglect such news today and let your mind fall asleep when hearing such matters as you've gradually grown indifferent to them with the progression of time.
The need of time is to stop reporting these cases if you do not find enough space on the front page for such petty issues and jump into what might be called a practical solution to it. Reporting is not bad until it is done badly - or in this case, inappropriately.

Women used as a medium to attract consumers.

Women have always been used as an attractive item in media. Taking a look at all the advertisements around us, 99 % of them include women. We see women in bike ads and shaving cream ads!!! Its just amazing that how media is using the female sex to promote their products; be it a men’s product advertisement, daily use product or any children advertisement, one thing is common in every ad: WOMEN.

The exploitation of women in the media has become so common, particularly in advertising that most people fail to get outraged or even notice it anymore. While carrying out a research in my first year of bachelors on the topic: Westernization in Pakistan, 90 % of the people agreed to the statement that women are being used as sex objects in advertisements.

Today women are being glamorized a lot. Looking at Bollywood and Hollywood movies women are being portrayed as the eye candy for the viewers. They are being depicted in roles which no longer exist in real life. An example is that young teenagers today have a great exposure to media and they learn and try to copy from it. So the slim and trim figures of actresses, models and other celebrities send message to those naïve minds to be like them. And these young teenagers in order to gain social appreciation, risk their health for the sake of slim bodies.

Aside from the above facts media today also shows that women are no longer the dependent ones. Women today are equal to men and they have the capabilities to stand and walk side by side with males in every field, me it household decisions, professional field or personal life, women’s role is equal to men!

Media no doubt is exploiting women’s god given beauty but it has also played a major role in giving equal rights to women. And because of this exposure given to females, women now can step forward and if not eradicate then at least reduce the torture of males, which is very common in the primitive societies of the world.

Concluding media portrays women as equal to men, but female sex is also being USED by the media.

51%

Geo News is one of the most viewed and popular news channels of Pakistan and that is why I chose a program from this channel. As it says on its website, its policy is that ‘It will highlight the issues of concern and the cultural richness of its people through information, discussion and entertainment. GEO will propagate transparency of responsibility that will ensure its position as the most credible and meaningful source of information, through quality programming based on issues.’
For this assignment I chose a show called 51% that is aired on Geo News. It is hosted by Nida Sameer and is basically a magazine show based on women. It is aired on weekly basis and is based on news and issues revolving around women. What I like about this show is that it not only shows the negative issues and problems that women of Pakistan face, but it also concentrates on positive aspects and on celebrating womanhood. It is a mix of both hard and soft news and is executed in a way that is entertaining as well as encouraging and not just depressing as we would expect shows revolving around women to be. The show consists of ‘stories that have universal appeal with subjects as diverse and sensitive as religion, society, sex, education and arts, all from women's perspectives.’
Geo News and TV has been known for airing shows that focus on women and their issues, there was a very popular show known as ‘Geo Hina k saath with Hina Bayat’. This is because a large number of audiences are women and there a lot of issues on women that need to be highlighted through the media. Geo portrays women through ‘51%’ as a progressive part of our society and as having the potential to become successful. In the special 6th September episode, we are shown how women of Pakistan have progressed and are now actively participating in different departments of the Pakistan Air Force. One episode was on the typical day in the life of a Pakistani woman during Ramadan, although the topic being simple, it was interesting and highlighted the importance of women in our daily lives.
Another episode is on the interview of Reshman – the singer who has made her mark internationally. The interview is well-conducted and explores how Reshman, despite being a woman and a part of the music industry since the 60’s has been successful and represented Pakistan all over the world. It is an inspiring show celebrating the women of Pakistan as well as showing some of the serious problems faced by them which hinders their growth. It motivates people to overcome these issues so we can progress as a society.
51% does not have a tone of exaggeration or sensationlization and is well-researched. Overall, the show is a well put together and has an underlying sense of encouragement for women, men and caters to all ages. It generates positive response from its audiences and is balanced and unbiased.

A book review of " The second sex"

The book that I believe played a revolutionary role in history and triggered a continuous thinking process is the extensive, scholarly study, written in 1946 by French existentialist novelist and feminist Simone de Beauvoir i.e. Le Deuxième Sexe (The Second Sex). This book as a matter of fact not only sparked the feminist movement but also became one of the most important books of the twentieth century. Beauvoir philosophically analyzed female oppression in The Second Sex where she says that women are fundamentally characterized by ambiguity and conflict. According to Simone de Beauvoir, woman is the “other” not only to men but also often to herself, an alien thing that is not quite human and has been reduced as a secondary gender by almost all the societies.
Beauvoir insightfully examines female biology and sexuality, myths relating to the female gender as a mother, a lesbian, a prostitute, and, ultimately, the liberated woman.
The author draws parallels between the situation of women and that of other oppressed groups such as the African-Americans and the Jews. It is believed that the African-American writer Richard Wright provided De Beauvoir with the theoretical model of oppression that she used in The Second Sex. She notes that it was men who created values, traditions, and religions. Therefore, male prejudices rather than any inborn defects in women have resulted in the dishonored position of females in society.
The Second Sex became a foundation for activist writers such as Betty Freidan and Kate millet. In the 1980s and 90s, authors such as Judith butler further built on her work. This glorious and genuinely revolutionary book began as an exceptional woman's attempt to find out who and what she was.
The book had an enormous impact on the women's movement, throughout the world, but especially in France, where women were not given the vote until 1945.

Representation of women

Women have always been victimized by being measured against cultural and religious morals of beauty, but advertising today often uses a little extreme by adding the element of sexism to make these notions of "ideal beauty" more prevalent and increasingly unattainable leading to various sorts of complexes.

There is no doubt, that advertisements and media in particular have their own marketing strategies. But the way they portray women as a sexual and saleable commodity, is indeed a cause of concern and needs to be checked.

We see that with modernization, woman's physical attributes are commercially browbeaten. In advertising, women are presented as an object of fantasized attraction to boost up sales. Whether a car commercial, or the introduction of a new tea brand, cooking oil, shampoos or other consumer goods, women remain the sale attraction. They use their body images even for the sale of the products.

Hence, we see that it is high time to realize and curb all the negative roles played by media to portray women and this very media should be used to promote the women as to what they actually are suppose to be presented as. This is the time to come up with policies and ramifications to make and use media as a useful and more responsible tool to promote gender equality and positive attitudes and behaviors.

I am uploading a video in which Dr. Zakir Naik gives an answer of a lady who asked him about the Islamic practices about the women working in a media. It is an interesting video to watch and I hope our readers would appreciate our effort. Feel free to comment on the topic so we can know our reader's opinion on the below video.

women on the same level as men in news channels??

News channels a decade ago were limited to a number of 3 or 4.Nowadays we have approximately 30 to 40 newschannels.Freedom to media especially news channels was levied in musharafs era. For my report I chose to analyze news channels and evaluate whether the freedom of speech in media has helped women to an extent or not. My basic focus was mainly on geo, dunya, express news, samaa and Ajj TV.

I looked at the news bulletin at 8 as well as 9 on these particular channels and it could be seen that almost on every channel one of the news caster is a women. Some news channels even have both the news casters as women. This shows that women now in this era are treated with respect and are placed on the same level as men.

However all the news reports regarding women are always either degrading or disturbing. On every news channel we either hear about rape stories, or domestic violence stories. Words such as “mazloom” “bechari” etc are used for women on regular basis. One out of 10 days we hear about women who actually have achieved something in life and are working for any cause.

If we look at talk shows hosted by men and women on news channels, it would not be wrong to say that women are as focused and well educated about all the issues as men. I am not denying the fact that men are still in a majority but women are no longer the minority. If we start naming talk shows we can state many such as “News beat on SAMMA” by Meher bokhari, talkshow by “Nasim zehra”,” Katrina on express news” and “Asma on dunya”.time slots given to these women anchors are he same as men. They are not treated or portrayed as beauty objects on television rather they talk about facts and figures as confidently as men.

Whereas if we look at other talk shows hosted by women in the morning such as good morning Pakistan, Nadia khan show, morning with hum etc all of these shows have no subject and no aim in it. the talk shows are basically more focused on the clothes the anchors are wearing the shoes they wear etc. These shows present women as weak and meager who can only talk about clothes and shopping.

Women like nasim zehra and meher bokhari are showing a totally different picture to the world.nasim is an aged woman whereas meher is a young woman but we cannot compare their strong points. Both of them are fully capable and deserving on their posts.meher bokhari has broken or at least tried to break the stereotype on young women. she has shown our society that not only can women look beautiful but what they talk about also has substance” Every woman is a dumb blonde.” this notion has totally been broken and been proven right by all the anchors on every newschannel.according to me they show a new light and spark for every women. Women nowadays cannot be set back by men but they now walk with men in every walk of life, especially women on news channels have proved themselves right quite confidently and have been able to set the bar quite high for not only women but men in their fields as well.

Women as a stereotype in Media

Women have been appearing on media since media was born but their portrayed image and role was entirely different from what it is today. If we look back in the 1940s and 1950s women were working as actresses in Hollywood movies and TV. Later in the 60s and 70s TV advertisement became massively popular and thanks to women who made masses buy products that one would have not bought in their lifetimes if it was not for those glamorous ads. Media has always worked on highlighting the role of women in society and they have been given the chance to prove themselves in their participation in politics, work and other aspects within their community.
Feminists have always recognized the power of the media to control women's lives. So the question is how are women represented on media? Simple answer is that men are attracted to women and the way women are presented on media is directly proportional to the success of that program or you can say it increases viewership of a particular program. Fashion industry is one that played a vital role in promoting women. Today’s fashion programs make clever display of feminism that both men and women are attracted to. Models look extremely beautiful by wearing all that makeup, clothes and funky hairstyles but in real life it’s not often the case.
Typically women appeared in stereotypic roles like dumb blonde, sex object or a whimpering victim. When women were presented in a positive light it was always in the role of mother and homemaker. So these days we often see directors and producers paying heaps of cash to actresses and urging them to show some skin. Reason… so that the movie receives a higher viewership and they can that extra buck.
Apart from above women roles are changing over the time, in 1960s a woman was usually a housewife in movies or TV but now the majorities of adult female characters in new programs have jobs outside the home, usually in professional or high-powered positions. In reality, most women are concentrated in low-paying clerical and service jobs. Also every other news caster is a woman; let it sports, business or gadgets; because these topics are of interest to men and so are women! So women are often used as a magnet to attract male audience. Although a new image of woman is being projected by the media, we must consistently check that image against the realities of the majority of women's lives.

Are women portrayed as objects to look at??

“Equality” has been the notion on which feminists have been arguing and discussing in every walk of life. Women nowadays have mastered in every field known to mankind. In every organization you will find a woman working along men.the question here arises have women been able to reduce the gap between men and women or has the gap increased. Is equality really a problem or is it a notion just created by women themselves.

Nowadays women are being given a lot of scope in media.wehther you go through a news channel or a morning show women are everywhere. My analysis is a bit different from all the feminists. I believe women are being represented to a great extent in media, but women are not taking this to their advantage. Rather they are presenting themselves as glamorized objects to stare at.

Women are hosting many talk shows on television but the talk shows don’t really have any output for the people rather our women in the society are being lured towards what the host is wearing. For example Nadia khan show its content totally revolves around clothes in my view. Women rather then learning anything only ask for her clothes are impressed by their hairstyle etc.

If we look at it from a different perspective women probably still are being neglected to an extent. The stereotype has still not been broken that women can actually perform better then men. What ever the women in media do it is always looked with a negative perspective. Flaws are searched in it but nobody has the ability to accept that the work actually might be good.

However some women have represented themselves quite well. If we look at political talk shows hosts like najam zehra have achieved quite a lot of respect. She has been able t break the stereo type that women only know how to dress up and look good. as people said women are beauty without brains but she has been able to prove it wrong.

Then we can’t only say that she alone shows a positive picture of women in media because the positive point for women are still far less then the negative.

Conservative to Liberal... Women in media

The representation of women has been evolving over the decades and how women are portrayed in media can be analyzed from various aspects. Media consist of vast number of channels and how women are portrayed varies upon channel to channel, culture to culture and the country that channel belongs to or is being broadcasted from. None the less, it goes without saying that strides have been made in the way women are portrayed on channels, Movies, TV Shows and so forth. To the extent, that their growth in the presence and influence have created a certain interest and hype among people.
When talked about such an issue people have a lot of different views and some most certainly would say that women are presented in such a manner to increase the viewer's rate for a specific channel, show, movie etc. which to greater extent is rational. And how that is done is again an art. The authenticity with which it is presented is what appeals the most to the public. This has been happening for decades. Society especially men crave for extreme pleasure, to somehow quench their thirst and it is fascinating to see how media knows exactly how to do that.
Women portrayal varies on media: Liberalization, Modernization, equality, varying roles in a society, stereotyping. So they are basically being presented from all sort of views and aspects it just depends which one compels you the most.
One of the most interesting issues is how thin the women on television are portrayed which is mostly related to the fashion industry. Fashion has crept from all corners of the world to get much attention and that is what our society is starting to become; Fashion orientated society and that without a doubt is the Media influence. This has given a birth to a "norm" for all the females in society where female figure has drastically changed from voluptuous and curvy to waif-like thin And making them believe that this is how they all should be. Moreover, teens shown on media have drastically changed from the previous era, although shown to be as very presumptuous, modern, strong and independent but all at the expense of their parents. The attitude and behavior towards parents is portrayed to be changing and that is influencing teens in real world. Furthermore, working women are shown all over the media that now women are given the equal rights and they are capable of presenting themselves in the business world and that is how women should be if they wish to be. The list of the roles of women goes on and on and again do have influence on the society. In addition, women are being used as sex objects as well and that yet again as mentioned above to boost the sales. And finally they are presented in a stereotypical roles as well. The majority of soap operas are set in a domestic situation, because the home is a place where women's expertise is supposedly values and is also a place of comfort. Research shows that “good" women are presented as submissive, sensitive and domesticated, "bad" women are rebellious, independent and selfish.
After the two world wars and a series of national liberation movements, women had begun to find their own voices and seek a more active role in public and academic life. There is an urgent need to increase the participation and access of women to expression and decision making at all levels and achieve the gender balance in the appointment of women in all form of the media. It is required to promote and portray the diversified positive role played by the women in media.

Role of women in Entertainment Channels

Entertainment channels are an integral part of any society; they portray the basic values, norms and beliefs of any society. For my report, I chose to analyze 2 hour slots for three days, from Geo and Hum television. Time slot was from 8 to 10 p.m.
All the entertainment channels nowadays are focusing either on family issues or women. On Geo the 2 hour slot consisted of almost all those serials which are related to women issues. At 8 P.M, a program was aired by the name of “Buri Aurat”. This program totally revolves around how people meet with different women of different personalities now days. Some women in the show were portrayed quite innocent and some were shown quite evil.
At 8:30 P.M, another show gets aired by the name of “Yeh kaisi mohabbat hai”, which totally revolves around girls who are waiting to get married. Family values were also shown but of the lower middle class of the society. At 9 P.M, “Tere pehlu main" was aired and it also totally revolved around family issues. At 9:30 P.M, a new program is aired by the name of “Tanveer Fatima B.A”. As the name depicts, this show revolves around a young girl who belongs to a middle class family and her problems.
By looking at all the programs on Geo television we can state that all programs have a majority of women working in them. This is solely due to the subject of all the serials. In some shows, women are portrayed as strong and career oriented and some are shown as quite helpless. It can be seen evidently that women play quite an important role in media, especially on entertainment channels.
If we look at the other television channel which I chose, at 8:00 P.M a show gets aired by the name of “Mannchalay” which revolves around a family and unfolds their interesting lives. At 8:35, “Thori si khusiya” gets aired. This television soap revolves around a couple who belong to different religion and what difficulties they are facing in their love life. At 9:45, “Planet Bollywood” gets aired. It is hosted by a woman who tells about the news about the Bollywood.
By watching above programs, we can state that this particular television channel is showing family shows as they were not specifically about the women. Women do have a foremost role in the above soaps but they were not the main character in each of the soap. But I can state that, in each of the soap women do play a vital role.
By watching the above mentioned channels, women have a vital role in the entertainment world. Every soap has a women either she is playing a main character in a soap or a side role. This depicts that woman play an important role in the entertainment channel either by playing a role of a career oriented women or an innocent one.
On the other hand one point which is quite evident is that in every serial woman is portrayed as very meager or a person who has no say in her life. Even the serials revolving around family values tell us that women are suppose to stay at home only.
Our media is entertaining the society by either making the women very glamorous who wear embroidered clothes when they cook even when they sleep. We as a nation are following two extremes either we show women as an evil lady or as a helpless soul.
