Role of women in Entertainment Channels

Entertainment channels are an integral part of any society; they portray the basic values, norms and beliefs of any society. For my report, I chose to analyze 2 hour slots for three days, from Geo and Hum television. Time slot was from 8 to 10 p.m.
All the entertainment channels nowadays are focusing either on family issues or women. On Geo the 2 hour slot consisted of almost all those serials which are related to women issues. At 8 P.M, a program was aired by the name of “Buri Aurat”. This program totally revolves around how people meet with different women of different personalities now days. Some women in the show were portrayed quite innocent and some were shown quite evil.
At 8:30 P.M, another show gets aired by the name of “Yeh kaisi mohabbat hai”, which totally revolves around girls who are waiting to get married. Family values were also shown but of the lower middle class of the society. At 9 P.M, “Tere pehlu main" was aired and it also totally revolved around family issues. At 9:30 P.M, a new program is aired by the name of “Tanveer Fatima B.A”. As the name depicts, this show revolves around a young girl who belongs to a middle class family and her problems.
By looking at all the programs on Geo television we can state that all programs have a majority of women working in them. This is solely due to the subject of all the serials. In some shows, women are portrayed as strong and career oriented and some are shown as quite helpless. It can be seen evidently that women play quite an important role in media, especially on entertainment channels.
If we look at the other television channel which I chose, at 8:00 P.M a show gets aired by the name of “Mannchalay” which revolves around a family and unfolds their interesting lives. At 8:35, “Thori si khusiya” gets aired. This television soap revolves around a couple who belong to different religion and what difficulties they are facing in their love life. At 9:45, “Planet Bollywood” gets aired. It is hosted by a woman who tells about the news about the Bollywood.
By watching above programs, we can state that this particular television channel is showing family shows as they were not specifically about the women. Women do have a foremost role in the above soaps but they were not the main character in each of the soap. But I can state that, in each of the soap women do play a vital role.
By watching the above mentioned channels, women have a vital role in the entertainment world. Every soap has a women either she is playing a main character in a soap or a side role. This depicts that woman play an important role in the entertainment channel either by playing a role of a career oriented women or an innocent one.
On the other hand one point which is quite evident is that in every serial woman is portrayed as very meager or a person who has no say in her life. Even the serials revolving around family values tell us that women are suppose to stay at home only.
Our media is entertaining the society by either making the women very glamorous who wear embroidered clothes when they cook even when they sleep. We as a nation are following two extremes either we show women as an evil lady or as a helpless soul.
